Why 20-Inch Wheels and 5.0-Inch Tyres Change the Ride

Most fat tyre eBikes default to 26″ × 4.0″. The Romeo II deliberately goes smaller in diameter and wider in section. That choice has three practical consequences for Canadian riders.

Lower centre of gravity on a heavy machine. A 143-lb bike with the wheels closer to the ground is more stable when stopped, easier to balance at slow speeds, and less prone to tipping when loaded with panniers or a child seat. Riders in the 5′4″–5′10″ range generally get both feet flat on the ground at a stop — a confidence factor on icy intersections that gets undersold.

5.0-inch tyres are floatation tyres. A 4-inch tyre at 28 PSI is a fat tyre. A 5-inch tyre at the same pressure has noticeably more contact patch — meaningful on soft snow, loose gravel, and packed beach sand where narrower tyres dig in. That extra width is also a passive comfort feature on broken pavement — the tyre itself is doing suspension work before the fork or shock has to.

What You Should Know Before Buying (Honest Take)

• Cadence sensor, not torque sensor. Assist is on/off in PAS levels — consistent and predictable, but not proportional to your effort the way a torque-sensing bike feels. Some riders prefer the cadence behaviour for its predictability, especially when carrying loads. If proportional PAS is a hard requirement, the Eunorau FAT AWD 3.0 is the torque-sensor AWD option.
• 143 lbs (65 kg) is a real number. Ground-floor storage is strongly recommended. Loading into a truck bed solo requires a ramp or a second person. Once moving under motor power, the weight is invisible — but it matters every time the bike isn’t moving.
• 330 lb payload ceiling. The Romeo Pro II is rated to 500 lbs. If you are a heavier rider, regularly carry significant cargo, or want maximum headroom on the spec sheet, the Romeo Pro II is the right choice.
• 80mm front fork vs 100mm on the Pro II. Adequate for pavement, gravel, and mixed-surface commuting. For aggressive trail use with large impacts, the Pro II’s additional 20mm of travel is noticeable. For everything most Canadian riders actually do, 80mm is fine.
• Factory top speed is 32 km/h, period. If you want a bike that legally rides faster than 32 km/h on Canadian public infrastructure, no PAB does — that is the federal ceiling. The Romeo II isn’t hiding speed — the rules are. Off-road mode unlocks higher performance for private use only.
• Available in black only. No colour choice. The Romeo Pro II offers three colourways if that matters to you.
• Inner-tube tyres, not tubeless. Cheaper to repair, slightly more puncture-prone than a tubeless setup. Carry a spare tube and a 16-gauge needle pump if you ride remote.
