The bikes on this shelf, highest rated load first
All figures are the makers’ own. Rider height, weight, tire and load were confirmed on each maker’s page on 18 October 2026 (heights shown in feet and inches and in centimetres); rated, peak and battery figures were confirmed in each bike’s own text the same day. — = a figure we did not confirm for this model on its maker’s page on 18 October 2026; the bike’s own page has its full specifications. Prices and stock are live from our store; a bike shows “Sold out” when no version is in stock.
How we choose the bikes on this shelf
We read the maximum load each maker prints for the bike, in the unit it prints it, and shelve the bike when that figure is 400 lb or more. A rating printed only in kilograms is converted at 2.2046 lb per kg, so a 180 kg rating (397 lb) stays off. Where a maker prints two different figures for one bike, we print both, and a bike whose figures fall on either side of 400 lb stays off. Our heavy-rider guide picks the best of them; its rule of thumb is a rating at least 50 lb above your loaded weight.
The road rules
Canada’s federal e-bike definition was repealed in 2021, and the rules are now provincial: they converge on a motor of 500W or less, assistance that stops at 32 km/h (Nova Scotia's 30 km/h ends on 19 October 2026) and working pedals. A bike rated over 500W, or two motors over 500W together, is not a road-legal power-assisted bicycle in any province at any mode setting.
28 of the 41 bikes on this shelf are rated over 500W by their makers. Check your province and municipality before public-road use: our laws guide goes province by province.
FAQ: electric bikes for heavy riders
Is there a weight limit for electric bikes?
Yes. Every maker rates its bike for a maximum load, and the rating covers you plus everything you carry; where a maker splits rider and cargo, the table shows the split. Every bike on this shelf is rated for 400 lb (181 kg) or more by its maker, and the table shows each figure.
Can a 400 lb person ride an electric bike?
Yes, on a bike rated for the weight. Our heavy-rider guide’s rule of thumb is a rating at least 50 lb above your loaded weight, so a 400 lb rider looks for 450 lb or more; the table on this page lists the highest ratings first.
