Mesh Over the Mouth and Nose, About 42 to 50 Grams, Glasses Holes If You Want Them

This West Biking balaclava is a thin, one-piece summer hood made to be worn under a cycling helmet. It covers your head, ears and face, leaves one opening for the eyes, and puts an open mesh panel over the mouth and nose, with more mesh at the crown and a textured section around the chin. It comes in four styles: long, with a flap that covers the neck, or short, each with or without holes for the arms of your glasses.

Per the supplier, the fabric is a stretch knit of 88% nylon, 12% spandex. It is one size, for a head circumference of about 52 to 62 cm, and weighs about 42 g (short) or 50 g (long).

We have not tested one yet. What follows comes from the supplier’s listing, photos and description, which we read on 7 October 2026. Where the supplier makes a claim we cannot check, we tell you so instead of repeating it.

Wearing it under a helmet: fit the helmet with the mask on

The supplier pictures this mask under a cycling helmet and describes it as a helmet lining. Helmet guidance in Alberta and in Newfoundland and Labrador is cautious about anything between the helmet and your head. Alberta Health Services’ helmet checklist says “I don’t wear a hat or cap between my helmet and my head”, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador says “Anything that could change the way your helmet fits should not be worn.” The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute says a cap “can be ok under a helmet if the helmet is still fitted correctly”.

If you wear it under your helmet, fit the helmet with the mask on, every time. With the mask on, check that:

  • the helmet sits level from front to back, its front edge one to two finger-widths above your eyebrows;
  • the side straps form a V just below and in front of your earlobes;
  • the chinstrap is fastened with only one finger-width between strap and chin;
  • the helmet does not move when you nod or shake your head.

That list follows the Alberta checklist. If your helmet will not pass it with the mask on, ride without the mask, and if you take the mask off for a ride, the helmet needs adjusting again, as the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute points out. Our eBike safety guide covers the rest of helmet and visibility basics.

Feature by Feature

  • Mesh mouth-and-nose panel. An open mesh panel covers the mouth and nose, with a grey V-shaped strip across it that the supplier describes as reflective.
  • Textured chin section. Below the mesh, a raised honeycomb texture wraps the chin and jaw.
  • Mesh crown. A mesh section sits at the top of the head, which the supplier calls a breathable hole design.
  • Glasses holes on two styles. An oval opening at each temple, ringed in light-coloured trim, lets the arms of glasses or sunglasses pass through the mask. The supplier’s photos show sunglasses worn that way under a helmet.
  • Long or short. The long style stands about 27 cm tall and adds a flap over the neck; the short style is about 22 cm and stops below the chin.
  • Reflective trim. The supplier describes a reflective strip at the mouth and nose, and its night photo also shows the WEST BIKING print on the neck flap and the rims of the glasses holes lit up. It is trim on a black mask, so keep your bike’s lights and any other visibility gear.
  • Quick-drying stretch knit. The supplier lists the fabric as quick-drying, breathable and stretchy.

Which Style?

All four styles are black and one size. Heights and weights are the supplier’s; neck coverage is read from its photos.

The four styles
Style Height and weight Covers the neck
Long with glasses holes about 27 cm, 50 g Yes
Long about 27 cm, 50 g Yes
Short with glasses holes about 22 cm, 42 g No
Short about 22 cm, 42 g No

The supplier also lists a “perimeter” of 40 cm (long) and 32 cm (short) without saying where it is measured. The fit range it gives is a head circumference of about 52 to 62 cm.

The Honest Take

  1. It is not protective gear. This is a knitted fabric mask, and the supplier’s “anti-collision” wording comes with no test, standard or padding specification, so we do not repeat it.
  2. No UPF rating. UV protection is on the supplier’s feature list, but no UPF rating or test is published, and we have not tested it.
  3. It is a summer mask. The supplier lists it for summer, and at about 42 to 50 g it is no substitute for a winter balaclava.
  4. It does not filter dust or pollution. The listing describes no filter, and the mouth panel is open mesh.
  5. Some details are missing. The supplier publishes no washing method and no warranty term for this mask.

Who It Suits, and Who Should Skip It

It suits riders who want a thin cover for the face and ears under the helmet on warm, sunny rides, with the neck covered too in the long style. Riders in glasses or sunglasses have the two glasses-hole styles. It only suits you if you will refit the helmet with the mask on. Our eBike safety guide covers helmets and being seen, and the complete Canadian eBike guide covers the bikes.

Skip it if you need a stated UPF rating, face protection in a crash, a dust or pollution filter or warmth for cold rides, or if your helmet will not fit snugly with it on. For the rest of our riding gear, see the accessories collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear it under my bike helmet?

It is made for that, but fit the helmet with the mask on. Alberta Health Services’ helmet checklist says not to wear a hat or cap between your helmet and your head, and Newfoundland and Labrador’s guidance says anything that could change how your helmet fits should not be worn. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute says a cap can be fine if the helmet is still fitted correctly. With the mask on, your helmet should sit level, one to two finger-widths above your eyebrows, with the side straps in a V under your ears, one finger-width between chinstrap and chin, and no movement when you shake your head. If it will not, ride without the mask.

Does it block the sun? Is it UPF-rated?

The supplier lists UV protection among the mask’s features, but it publishes no UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rating or test result, and we have not tested it. If you need a stated level of sun protection, choose a product whose label gives a UPF. It also leaves the skin around your eyes uncovered.

Will it pull into my mouth when I’m breathing hard?

Some riders of other thin masks say the fabric pulls against the mouth or nose on a hard breath. This one puts an open mesh panel there instead of the main knit, and the supplier calls it breathable, but we have not ridden in one, so we cannot tell you how it behaves at hard efforts.

Will my glasses or sunglasses fog up?

We cannot promise either way. The supplier makes no claim about fogging and we have not tested it. What the listing does show is the breathing panel: open mesh over the mouth and nose rather than solid fabric.

Which style should I choose?

Choose long if you want your neck covered: it adds a neck flap and stands about 27 cm tall, against about 22 cm for the short style, which stops below the chin. Choose a style with glasses holes if you ride in glasses or sunglasses, so the arms pass through the mask. All four are one size, for a head circumference of about 52 to 62 cm, per the supplier.

Is it warm enough for fall or winter riding?

It is not made for that. The supplier lists the mask for summer, and at about 42 to 50 g it is a thin layer. For cold rides a fleece or thermal balaclava is the better choice, and our winter eBike guide lists the rest of the cold-weather kit.

Does the textured chin section protect my face in a crash?

Do not count on it. This is a knitted fabric mask. The supplier calls it “anti-collision protection” but publishes no test, standard or padding specification to back that, so we do not repeat the claim. The protection is your helmet: wear it, fitted correctly, on every ride.

What is it made of, and how do I wash it?

Per the supplier, 88% nylon, 12% spandex, with mesh at the mouth, nose and crown. The supplier calls the fabric “ice silk”; that is a trade name, and there is no silk in this mask. It says the mask can be washed repeatedly without the colour fading, but it gives no washing method, so we will not invent one.
