Smartravel Rocket ST201F Retro Fat Tire Ebike
Smartravel Rocket ST201F: A 1,500 W Retro Fat Tire eBike With a 1,228.8 Wh Battery
The Smartravel Rocket ST201F (model code ZM21) is a moped-style fat tire e-bike with one rear hub motor rated 1,200 W sustained and 1,500 W peak. It carries a removable 48 V 25.6 Ah battery (1,228.8 Wh), hydraulic disc brakes, suspension at both ends and 20 × 4-inch tires. It weighs 47.3 kg (104.1 lb), carries 158.8 kg (350 lb) of rider and cargo, and Smartravel publishes a 51.5 km/h (32 mph) top speed. Its motor is past the 500 W in every provincial e-bike rule, so it is a machine for private land, trails and tracks where the owner allows it.

Where You Can Ride the Rocket ST201F in Canada
⚠️ Smartravel rates the Rocket’s motor at 1,200 W sustained (1,500 W peak) and publishes a 51.5 km/h top speed. Both are past the 500 W and 32 km/h in every provincial e-bike rule (Newfoundland and Labrador’s Act has no e-bike definition), so no province lets it ride roads, bike lanes or paths as an e-bike. Off public roads, the landowner, trail authority or track sets access; check the off-road vehicle rules where you ride. For riding on public roads, start with our 500 W collection. Will the Rocket ST201F Fit You? Check Your Height First
The bench does not adjust. Smartravel’s geometry chart puts it at 87 cm (34.25 in); its FAQ says 33 in. Our US sister store, RedTail eBikes, set both figures against the 6,068 people the US Army measured for its 2012 body survey and counted how many riders at each height can sit with both feet flat at a stop (RedTail’s Rocket fit table).
| Your height | At 34.25 in (Smartravel’s chart) | At 33 in (Smartravel’s FAQ) |
|---|---|---|
| 5′6″ | 1 of 100 | 11 of 100 |
| 5′8″ | 6 of 100 | 37 of 100 |
| 5′9″ | 16 of 100 | 55 of 100 |
| 5′10″ | 30 of 100 | 79 of 100 |
| 5′11″ | 56 of 100 | 94 of 100 |
| 6′0″ | 77 of 100 | 96 of 100 |
| 6′1″ | 93 of 100 | 99 of 100 |
| 6′2″ | 97 of 100 | 100 of 100 |
Read the 34.25-inch column if you want a margin: a wide bench spreads your legs and costs some reach, which a straight inseam does not count. At the chart’s height, most riders under 5′11″ stop on their toes. RedTail also found the bench sits 3 to 12 inches below the usual pedalling height for the median rider at every height from 5′0″ to 6′3″, so the Rocket is a throttle-led bike: the pedals help, they are not a workout.
Shorter than 5′11″? The Riding Times Z8 / Z8 Pro lets 38 of 100 riders at 5′8″ put both feet flat (measured on the Z8 Pro). Our e-bikes by height guide matches bikes to rider heights across the store.
Watch Our Rocket ST201F Review
We rode the Rocket on a snowy trail for this review, published January 20, 2025. On YouTube we filed it under the Raptor name (“ST201 Raptor”); it is this bike, the Rocket ST201F.

How Far the Rocket ST201F Goes on a Charge
Smartravel says up to 60 miles (97 km) on electric power and over 80 miles (129 km) with pedal assist, without naming a speed or a rider weight. RedTail eBikes computed the 1,228.8 Wh pack ride by ride, from Smartravel’s motor rating and a published cycling-power model (RedTail’s Rocket range tables):
| 16 km/h, throttle only | ≈150 km |
|---|---|
| 24 km/h, throttle only | ≈109 km |
| 32 km/h, throttle only | ≈79 km |
| 40 km/h, throttle only | ≈56 km |
| 24 km/h, pedalling easily | ≈167 km |
| 16 km/h up a steady 8% grade, throttle only | ≈19 km |
| 32 km/h, throttle only, at 0 °C | ≈63 km (56–66 km) |
These figures are computed, not measured on a ride. Plan on three-quarters of the row that matches yours and keep a quarter in the pack for wind, hills and detours; heavier riders, stop-and-go riding and cold all cut range. Our long-range e-bike guide shows the same range maths for 17 other bikes.
Key Features
- 1,200 W sustained, 1,500 W peak, 86 N·m — a geared hub in the rear wheel, which Smartravel says adjusts its output with FOC control. The sustained figure is the one the range model uses; the peak is for bursts. In RedTail eBikes’ model it holds 16 km/h up a steady 8% grade on the throttle alone, with an 82 kg rider. Our 500W vs 750W vs 1000W explainer sets these figures against the provincial limits.
- 1,228.8 Wh removable battery — 48 V 25.6 Ah, LG cells according to Smartravel’s FAQ, with a battery management system. It locks with a key and slides out, so the bike can stay in the garage while the pack charges indoors. Smartravel says it keeps 80% of its capacity after 800 charges.
- Hydraulic disc brakes, front and rear — stopping 47.3 kg of bike plus you. Smartravel’s manual says the levers cut motor power when you brake, asks for the rear brake before the front, and warns that wet roads need a longer stopping distance.
- Suspension at both ends — a hydraulic front fork and a hydraulic rear shock. Two owners found the rear firm, one of them at 70 kg (155 lb), RedTail eBikes reports; tell us your weight and roads before you order and we will tell you what to expect.
- 20 × 4.0-inch fat tires — unibody tires with puncture protection, with fenders over both wheels. They grip on gravel, sand and loose snow; for ice, studded tires in the same size are the upgrade to look for.
- Ready to carry — a brown storage bag on the frame, a rear rack, LED head and tail lights, an aluminum kickstand and a Smart LCD that shows speed, battery and distance and charges your phone over USB.
- UL 2849 — Smartravel says the ST201F is certified to UL 2849, the safety standard for an e-bike’s electrical system, battery and charger included (its badge: “TUV Certified · In accordance with UL 2849”). Ask us for the certificate if your building or insurer needs it.
What Comes in the Box
The Rocket ST201F, one battery, the charger, the storage bag and a tool kit (Smartravel’s list). Smartravel says the bike arrives 90% assembled: you fit and tighten the handlebars. Assembly walkthroughs by phone or video are included in your first month of Zeus Care; call 1-866-938-7580.
The Honest Take: What to Know Before You Buy
- The bench is high and does not move. At Smartravel’s chart height only 30 of 100 riders at 5′10″ can put both feet flat at a stop, against 56 at 5′11″ (RedTail eBikes). If you are shorter, the Riding Times Z8 / Z8 Pro fits more riders flat-footed.
- One gear, built for the throttle. There is nothing to shift, and the bench sits well below a pedalling height for the median rider at every height RedTail modelled. Pedals help on the flat; the motor does the work. If you want gears and a real pedalling position, look at the Smartravel Raptor ST202 (Shimano 7-speed) or read our pedal assist vs throttle guide.
- It is over the provincial e-bike limits. At 1,200 W sustained and 51.5 km/h it cannot ride roads, bike lanes or paths as an e-bike in any province. For riding on public roads, our 500 W collection is the place to start.
For a rider of 5′11″ or more with land or trails to ride, it gives you 1,228.8 Wh, hydraulic brakes, suspension at both ends and a UL 2849 electrical system. Of the four bikes compared below, it is the lowest-priced with both hydraulic brakes and suspension at both ends, and it costs $400 less than the Raptor ST202 (October 2026 prices).
Who Is the Rocket ST201F For?
- Tall riders who want the moped look: a long bench, a round caged headlight and a brown frame bag, at 5′11″ and up. Compare the styles in our moped-style e-bike guide.
- Riders with land, a cottage or trail access: fat tires and suspension at both ends for gravel, grass and rough tracks where the landowner or trail authority allows a 1,200 W machine.
- Winter riders: we rode it on snow; read our winter e-bike guide for cold-weather battery care.
- Riders who charge indoors: the pack comes out, and the electrical system is certified to UL 2849 in Smartravel’s words.
Who it is not for: riders under about 5′11″ (look at the Riding Times Z8 / Z8 Pro); anyone who needs an e-bike for public roads (our 500 W collection); riders who want gears and a pedalling workout (the Smartravel Raptor ST202); and anyone planning to carry a passenger, since it is built for one rider.

Frequently Asked Questions
What riders ask about the Smartravel Rocket ST201F
How fast does the Smartravel Rocket ST201F go?
Smartravel publishes a top speed of 32 mph (51.5 km/h), past the 32 km/h at which every provincial e-bike rule stops motor assistance: one reason the Rocket cannot ride Canadian roads as an e-bike.
How far does the Rocket ST201F go on one charge?
Smartravel says up to 60 miles (97 km) on electric power and over 80 miles (129 km) with pedal assist, with no speed or rider weight named. Our US sister store, RedTail eBikes, computed it for an 82 kg (180 lb) rider on level pavement at 25 °C, on the throttle: about 109 km at 24 km/h and 79 km at 32 km/h. At 0 °C the 32 km/h figure drops to about 63 km. Plan on three-quarters of any full-charge figure (RedTail’s Rocket range tables).
What is the seat height, and how tall do I need to be?
The bench is fixed: 87 cm (34.25 in) on Smartravel’s geometry chart; its FAQ says 33 in. Our US sister store, RedTail eBikes, set both figures against the US Army’s body survey: at the chart’s 34.25 in, 30 of 100 riders at 5′10″ can sit with both feet flat, 56 at 5′11″, 77 at 6′0″ and 93 at 6′1″. At the FAQ’s 33 in, 79 of 100 at 5′10″ can (RedTail’s Rocket fit table). Shorter riders stop on their toes; the Riding Times Z8 / Z8 Pro seats more of them flat-footed.
Is the Smartravel Rocket ST201F street legal in Canada?
Smartravel rates its motor at 1,200 W sustained (1,500 W peak) and publishes a 51.5 km/h top speed. For public roads, see our 500 W collection. Canadian e-bike laws by province →
Does the Rocket ST201F have gears?
No. It has one speed: Smartravel’s own comparison lists the ST201F with no Shimano gears, as our US sister store, RedTail eBikes, records (RedTail’s motor section). You set the pace with the throttle and five assist levels. If you want gears for pedalling, the Smartravel Raptor ST202 has a Shimano 7-speed.
What battery does it use, and can I buy a replacement?
A removable 48 V 25.6 Ah lithium-ion pack (1,228.8 Wh) that unlocks with a key; Smartravel’s FAQ names LG as the maker. Owner reviews collected by RedTail eBikes show earlier Rockets with 20 Ah and 23.2 Ah packs, so match the label on yours: we stock a Smartravel ST201F battery. Send us a photo of your pack’s label or call 1-866-938-7580 before you order, and we will confirm the fit.
How long does the battery take to charge?
Smartravel quotes 5 to 6 hours. Its charger is rated 54.6 V 3 A, and at 3 A a fully empty 25.6 Ah pack needs about 8.5 hours of charging current (arithmetic by our US sister store, RedTail eBikes), so plan on an overnight charge from empty.
Will the Rocket ST201F still work if the battery runs out?
Yes, as a pedal bike. Smartravel says it “seamlessly transitions into a traditional bike”, and the manual lists assist level 0 as pure pedal mode. On one gear with 47.3 kg (104.1 lb) of bike it is slow going, so keep some charge in reserve.
Can the Rocket ST201F carry a passenger?
Plan on one rider. Smartravel’s 158.8 kg (350 lb) limit covers you and your cargo together, and RedTail eBikes found no passenger footrests in Smartravel’s photographs.
Is the Rocket ST201F UL certified?
Smartravel says the ST201F is certified to UL 2849, the safety standard for an e-bike’s electrical system, battery and charger included; its badge reads “TUV Certified · In accordance with UL 2849”. If a landlord, building or insurer asks for the certificate, call 1-866-938-7580 and we will request it from Smartravel in writing.
Can I ride it in winter?
Yes, with care. We filmed our review on snow (above), and the 20 × 4-inch tires give grip in loose snow. Cold cuts range: in RedTail eBikes’ model the 32 km/h figure falls from about 79 km at 25 °C to 63 km at 0 °C (its cold table). Smartravel’s manual says to avoid spraying the bike with a water hose and to store it somewhere dry, and its warranty excludes water damage, so wipe it down after slushy rides and charge the pack indoors. More in our winter e-bike guide.
Do I need to assemble it?
A little. Smartravel says the bike arrives 90% assembled: you fit and tighten the handlebars, and a tool kit comes in the box. Assembly walkthroughs by phone or video are included in your first month of Zeus Care (1-866-938-7580).
Is there an owner’s manual?
Yes. Smartravel’s owner’s manual (PDF) covers the controls, brakes, charging and care. Two lines worth knowing: the brake levers cut motor power when you brake, and Smartravel asks for the rear brake before and while you apply the front.
What warranty does the Rocket ST201F have?
Smartravel publishes a 12-month limited warranty on the frame, fork and handlebar, the pedals, saddle, brakes, drivetrain, suspension and rims, the motor, controller, charger, wiring, display, throttle, switches and lights, and the battery. It covers manufacturing defects; wear parts, misuse, accidents, modifications, non-original chargers and water damage are excluded. The warranty is backed by Smartravel in full, and we handle the claim for you. Your first month of Zeus Care is included; Zeus Care plans (1, 2, 3 or 5 years: $119, $229, $339 or $599) are a service, not added parts coverage (Warranty Policy & Zeus Care).
Can I finance the Rocket ST201F?
Yes, financing is available at checkout. Our guide to financing an e-bike in Canada →
What do owners say about the Rocket ST201F?
Three Zeus customers reviewed it in 2024 and 2025, all with five stars; one rides it to work daily on assist level 2. Their reviews are at the bottom of this page, and our own winter ride is in the video above.
Before you buy from Zeus
Has the Smartravel Rocket ST201F been recalled?
