Velotric Summit 2 — The SUV of eBikes, Now Faster, Smarter, and Quieter on the Climb
The Summit 1 was already the hardtail to beat under $3,000. 90 Nm of torque, UL-triple certification, Apple Find My, a 705 Wh Samsung/LG battery, and a 440 lb payload — it punched above its price tag and we said so in our full Summit 1 review. So when Velotric rolled out the Summit 2, the only question was whether they would protect a winning formula or rewrite it. They rewrote it. And every change is one the rider actually feels.
100 Nm of torque from a redesigned 750W inner-rotor hub motor that peaks at 1,300W — ten more Nm than the Summit 1, on the same kind of climbs where Summit 1 already wasn’t stalling. 801.6 Wh from an LG 21700 pack (up from 705 Wh) — 14% more cold-weather buffer, which in Canadian February is the difference between making it home and ending the ride in a Tim’s parking lot. Shimano CUES 9-speed with an 11–46T cassette replaces the old 8-speed Acera — one more gear, dramatically lower granny gear, smoother shifts under load. RST Vibe air fork with adjustable rebound and full lockout replaces the Summit 1’s hydraulic fork — you now tune the fork to your weight and your surface, not the other way around. Why the Summit 2 Sits in a Category of One
Every hybrid eBike under $3,000 makes you choose two of three: commute features, trail capability, or premium tech. Pick commute — you get fenders, lights, and racks but the fork is a 50 mm spring with no damping and the tires are 2.0″ slicks that wash out on the first gravel road. Pick trail — you get a real fork and grippy tires but no fenders, no integrated lights, no rack mounts, and your commute becomes a chore. Pick tech — you get Apple Find My or NFC unlock or a colour display, but the battery is 500 Wh and you’re plugging in every night. The Summit 2 is the first sub-$3,000 hardtail that refuses to make you pick two.
The RST Vibe 120 mm air fork is a real air-sprung suspension fork with tuneable air pressure, adjustable rebound damping, and a lockout switch on the crown. On smooth city pavement, flip the lockout and pedal without bob. On gravel, open it up and let it absorb the chatter. On light singletrack, drop the air a few psi and the front wheel tracks roots and rocks the way an actual mountain bike does. Tune it to your weight with a shock pump (anywhere from 100 to 250 lbs) — this is the kind of fork you find on $1,500 mountain bikes, not on hybrid commuters.
Kenda 27.5″ × 2.4″ puncture-resistant MTB tires with an aggressive knobby tread roll fast on pavement but bite when the surface turns to crushed limestone or hardpack. They are narrower than the Summit 1’s 2.6″ tires — that’s deliberate. Velotric traded a sliver of off-road float for lower rolling resistance on pavement. Combined with a battery that grew from 705.6 Wh to 801.6 Wh (+14%), the net effect is more usable range on a real commute, not just a bigger spec-sheet number.
And then there’s the Shimano CUES 9-speed drivetrain. CUES is Shimano’s newest groupset architecture, designed specifically for eBike torque loads — stronger chain, wider-pitch shifting, smoother under-power gear changes than the old Acera that came on the Summit 1. The 11–46T cassette range is enormous: an 11T at the top for high-speed cruising on flats and a 46T granny gear at the bottom for crawling up grades that would stall a 32T-cassette commuter. Compared with the 8-speed Acera on the Summit 1, this is the single biggest mechanical upgrade.
- Shimano MT200 Hydraulic Disc Brakes / 180 mm Rotors — Hydraulic brakes self-adjust as pads wear, maintain stopping power when wet, and require less hand force than mechanical disc brakes. What You Should Know (Honest Take)
- Hardtail only — no rear suspension. The 120 mm air fork absorbs everything the front wheel hits, but seat-transmitted impacts (square-edge potholes, expansion joints, hardpack root sections) still go straight to your lower back. For pavement, gravel, and light singletrack, the hardtail is the right call — lighter, more efficient, more reliable. For aggressive downhill or rocky technical trail riding, the Summit 2 is the wrong bike — look at the Himiway Cobra D7 or the Eunorau Specter-S for full suspension.
- Canadian PAB context — read this before street use. Canada regulates eBikes under the federal Power-Assisted Bicycle (PAB) framework: max 500W nominal motor, max 32 km/h assisted speed, pedals required. The Summit 2’s 750W motor exceeds the 500W PAB nominal limit, so the bike is not a federally-classified PAB regardless of mode setting. The Class 1/2/3 labels on the display are Velotric’s US-system speed-mode designations, not Canadian regulatory categories. - 63.3 lb is not light. With fenders, kickstand, pedals, and the battery installed, the Summit 2 weighs 63.3 lbs (28.7 kg). That is normal for a 750W hardtail with an 801 Wh battery and full integrated accessories — but it is worth knowing if you carry the bike up apartment stairs or load it on a bus bike rack. Without the battery (about 8 lbs removable), the bike is closer to 55 lbs.
- The 2.0″ display is smaller than the Summit 1’s 2.8″ display. Velotric traded display size for an integrated NFC card reader and cleaner cockpit. The smaller screen is still high-brightness, full colour, and angle-adjustable — readable in sunlight — but if you specifically prefer a larger readout, the Summit 1 still has the 2.8″ unit (and is still in our mountain eBike collection).
- Plastic platform pedals at this price tier. When the rest of the build — fenders, kickstand, fork stanchions, drivetrain — is genuinely premium, the plastic pedals stand out as the one place Velotric cut cost. Common across the industry at every price point. A $30–$50 set of aluminium pinned platform pedals from any bike shop is an obvious day-one upgrade for year-round riding.
- Assembly takes 30–45 minutes and includes air-fork pressure setup. Multiple reviewers noted that setting fork air pressure to your weight requires a shock pump (small, <$40 at any bike shop). The flip side: this is what makes the fork ride correctly. If you are not comfortable with a shock pump, any local bike shop will set it up in 15 minutes for the cost of a small service.
- 2.4″ tires are not fat tires. They are aggressive MTB knobbies, ideal for the Summit 2’s mission — commute, gravel, light trail. They will not match the flotation of a 4-inch fat tire on deep snow, soft sand, or peat bog. If your terrain is fat-tire-specific, the Velotric Nomad 2 is the same manufacturer’s purpose-built answer.
Everything else — the 100 Nm torque, the LG 21700 battery, the SensorSwap toggle, the air fork with full damping adjustments, the Shimano CUES 9-speed, the NFC unlock, the cross-platform tracking, the integrated lights and turn signals, the triple UL stack — is the strongest hybrid hardtail feature set in the Zeus lineup. How does NFC unlock work?
Two NFC cards come in the box, credit-card sized. Tap a card to the display area — the motor, controller, and display power on. No phone needed. No app login. No Bluetooth pairing delay. Up to three cards can be bound to one bike, so you can share one with a partner and keep a spare at home. What size should I choose — Regular or Large?
