MEROCA Light-Up Pedals: Seven Light Modes, USB-C Charging, Magnetic Light Pods

A headlight and a tail light sit still on the bike. A pedal travels with every stroke. These MEROCA flat pedals put their light on that moving part: aluminum-alloy platforms with removable light pods that glow red, green or blue in seven modes and recharge over USB-C.

There is research behind marking the moving legs. In a closed-road night study (Wood et al., 2012), 24 drivers responded to a cyclist wearing a vest plus ankle and knee reflectors at significantly longer distances than to one in the vest alone. In the same study a handlebar light, steady or flashing, did not make the cyclist noticed sooner. It tested reflective markings and handlebar lights, not lit pedals, so it neither shows that these pedals work nor that they do not.

Sold as a pair, left and right, marked L and R, at about 94 × 90 mm and 17 mm thick on a 14 mm spindle. We have not tested a pair yet. The figures here come from the supplier’s listing, drawing and demonstration video, which we read on 7 October 2026; where we translated the video’s Chinese captions, we say so.

What It Does

  • Seven light modes. The red switch button on each light pod steps through them: one press for red, two for blue, three for green, four for red and blue flashing, five for red and green flashing, six for green and blue flashing, seven for all three flashing. One more press turns the light off.
  • USB-C charging. The listing says a USB-C cable is provided and that a 5 V adapter, a computer USB port or a power bank will charge the pods.
  • Magnetic, removable pods. The pods lift out of the pedal body to charge and are held on magnetically. The supplier’s photo shows two pods lifted out of a single pedal; the listing does not state a pod count. The video shows a pod being removed from a pedal still fitted to the crank.
  • Automatic on and off. The listing advertises “intelligent start and stop.” In the video (captions in Chinese, our translation) the lights come on with vibration and go off when the pedal is still.
  • Aluminum-alloy platform, chromoly spindle. Per the listing, the body is aluminum alloy and the shaft core is chromium-molybdenum steel. The listing labels the tread edge an “anti-slip design.”
  • Sealed bearings. The supplier describes a sealed, three-bearing design that keeps dust out. No water-resistance rating is published, so keep them out of standing water and away from pressure washers.

Fitting Them

Thread the L pedal into the left crank arm and the R pedal into the right, and tighten each by turning toward the front wheel, the direction of pedalling. The supplier’s video says the same and names a 15 mm open-end wrench and a 6 mm hex key as the tools. On standard cranks the right pedal has a normal thread and the left a reverse thread (Sheldon Brown); the listing does not say whether this pair follows that, so if a pedal will not start by hand, stop and check you have the correct side.

The listing gives the spindle as 14 mm and names no thread standard. Most pedals use a 9/16 inch × 20 tpi thread, about 14.3 mm, and pedals for one-piece cranks use 1/2 inch. If you are not sure what your cranks take, call us before you order. In the box: a pair of pedals with their light pods and a USB-C charging cable. The listing mentions those three things and nothing else.

The Honest Take

  1. They are accent lights, not a headlight. The pods glow red, green or blue only. Keep the front and rear lights your bike needs, and check the lighting rules where you ride, including any limits on coloured or flashing lights, in our eBike laws guide.
  2. Battery, brightness and water-resistance numbers are missing. The supplier’s listing, images and video captions, read on 7 October 2026, give no battery capacity, run time, charge time, brightness, water-resistance rating, rider weight limit or named safety certification for these pedals, and we have not tested a pair. If you need those numbers on paper before you buy, wait.
  3. The weight is uncertain. The listing gives about 480 g for the pair in one place and 200 g in another, with no unit on the second.
  4. Flat pedals only. These are platform pedals for ordinary shoes and do not take cleats.

Who They Suit, and Who Should Skip Them

They suit riders who commute or ride in the evening on flat pedals, want a moving coloured light low on the bike in addition to their normal lights, and are happy to add a USB-C charge to their routine. Our eBike safety guide and winter eBike guide cover the rest of the dark-hours kit, and the urban eBike guide covers commuter bikes.

Skip them if you need a headlight, ride clipless pedals, have cranks that take 1/2 inch pedals, or want published battery and water-resistance numbers first. For visibility gear that needs no charging, see the West Biking reflective ankle strap or the LED reflective safety vest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these replace my bike’s headlight and tail light?

No. The pods glow red, green or blue only, so they are accent lights, not a headlight or tail light. Keep the front and rear lights your bike needs and check the lighting rules where you ride, including any limits on coloured or flashing lights. Our eBike laws guide is a good start.

How long does the battery last, and how do I charge it?

The supplier publishes no battery capacity, run time or charge time, and we have not tested a pair, so we will not quote a number. The pods charge over USB-C with a cable provided, from a 5 V adapter, a computer USB port or a power bank, and they lift out of the pedal to do it.

Do the lights turn on and off by themselves?

The listing advertises “intelligent start and stop.” In the supplier’s video (Chinese captions, our translation) the lights come on with vibration and go off when the pedal is still. Each pod also has a switch that steps through the seven modes and turns the light off.

Will they fit my bike?

The listing gives a 14 mm spindle but no thread standard. Most pedals use a 9/16 inch × 20 tpi thread (about 14.3 mm) and pedals for one-piece cranks use 1/2 inch, per Sheldon Brown. Not sure what yours take? Call 1-866-938-7580 before you order. On standard cranks the left pedal has a reverse thread, so match L and R to their sides and stop if one binds.

Are they waterproof?

No water-resistance rating is published. The supplier describes sealed bearings that keep dust out, and its video captions a wet pedal, in our translation, “resists everyday water drops.” Treat them as rain-tolerant at most, and keep them out of standing water and away from pressure washers.

How heavy are they?

The listing says about 480 g for the pair in one place and 200 g in another, with no unit on the second. The two disagree and we have not weighed a pair, so we are not choosing between them.

What if a light pod stops working?

A factory-defective pair is handled under the Dead-on-Arrival section of our refund policy. We have not confirmed a manufacturer warranty term or whether replacement pods are sold separately, so we state neither. Call 1-866-938-7580 before you order if either matters to you.

Are they worth it next to other light-up pedals?

That depends on what you want. Some light-up pedals sold in Canada publish a run time in their listings, and this one publishes none. If you want that number on paper before you buy, choose one that gives it. If you want a moving coloured light low on the bike and accept the unknowns above, these do that.
