All figures are the makers’ own. Rider height, weight, tire and load were confirmed on each maker’s page on 18 October 2026 (heights shown in feet and inches and in centimetres); rated, peak and battery figures were confirmed in each bike’s own text the same day. — = a figure we did not confirm for this model on its maker’s page on 18 October 2026; the bike’s own page has its full specifications. How we choose the bikes on this shelf

These are the 14 bikes our steep-hills guide recommends, in the guide’s own order, with today’s prices, each motor’s rated output and the bike’s weight as the maker prints them.

The road rules

Canada’s federal e-bike definition was repealed in 2021, and the rules are now provincial: they converge on a motor of 500W or less, assistance that stops at 32 km/h (Nova Scotia's 30 km/h ends on 19 October 2026) and working pedals. A bike rated over 500W, or two motors over 500W together, is not a road-legal power-assisted bicycle in any province at any mode setting.

9 of the 14 bikes on this shelf are rated over 500W by their makers. Check your province and municipality before public-road use: our laws guide goes province by province.

FAQ: electric bikes for steep hills

Which electric bike should I use for hilly terrain?
One with the torque and gearing for your climbs, at a weight you can handle. Our steep-hills guide ranks every bike on this shelf by torque, terrain and budget; the table here shows each motor’s rated output and each bike’s weight.

Can e-bikes go up steep hills?
Yes. Torque, gearing, your weight and how much you pedal decide how steep; our guide explains how much torque a climb needs and why a mid-drive motor can use the bike’s gears to help.
