Why the 24-Inch Wheel Is the Point, Not the Compromise

A smaller wheel usually signals a smaller everything — it is how manufacturers hit a lower price or squeeze in a shorter rider. Eunorau did the opposite here. The Honest Take — What We’d Change

1. 55 Nm is a flat-to-rolling number, not a hill-climbing one. The Meta is smooth and unbothered on city streets, waterfront paths and moderate inclines. Point it at a sustained steep grade with a rider near the 286 lb payload ceiling and it will feel like it is working. 2. A 24″ wheel carries less momentum over big hits than a 27.5″ one. That is simple physics and the trade you make for the low step-over and the light weight. The 3.0″ tyre and the front fork recover most of it, but if effortless roll-over on badly broken pavement is your top priority, the Meta 275 → is the same bike on the biggest wheel in the family.
3. Seven speeds and a basic coil fork are the right call here — but they are the ceiling. A 7-speed freewheel with a 42T chainring covers commuting comfortably and is trivially serviceable anywhere in Canada; riders who want a wide-range cassette for steep terrain or a tunable air fork for rough surfaces will find the limit. Fewer parts also means fewer things to maintain over a five-year ownership window, which is the trade Eunorau made deliberately.

None of those three are defects — they are the consequences of building a light, low, simple, road-legal commuter instead of a heavy do-everything bike. If your riding is urban and suburban, on pavement and packed paths, they will not cost you anything.

Is the Eunorau Meta 24 street-legal in Canada?

Yes, as shipped. Canada has had no federal e-bike definition since the Power-Assisted Bicycle definition in the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations was repealed effective 4 February 2021 (SOR/2020-22). E-bike road rules are now set provincially, and they converge on three limits: 500W nominal maximum, 32 km/h assisted maximum, operable pedals. The Meta 24 ships at 500W nominal, capped at 32 km/h (20 mph), with a working 7-speed drivetrain — inside those limits with no configuration. Eunorau labels it “Class 2, speed limited, unlockable”; Class 1/2/3 is the US classification system, not a Canadian legal category. Keep the bike at 32 km/h for public roads, because raising the cap takes it outside the provincial limits. The Meta 24 (24″ × 3.0″) weighs 61.7 lb, drops to a 30.7″ minimum seat height, and fits riders 5’3″–6’2″: the lightest, lowest and quickest-steering. The Meta 26 (26″ × 3.0″) weighs 68.4 lb and fits 5’4″–6’3″ — the widest comfort tyre and the broadest fit range. On the single 720 Wh Samsung-cell battery, Zeus estimates roughly 60–85 km in summer at pedal-assist 1–2 on pavement with active pedalling, and roughly 45–60 km if you lean on the throttle or ride high assist on hills. Those are our calculations from the 720 Wh capacity, not manufacturer figures. Eunorau’s headline “100 miles” (161 km) is a best-case number that requires the optional second 48V 15Ah battery, which takes total capacity to roughly 1,440 Wh and roughly doubles range. Does the Meta 24 use a torque sensor or a cadence sensor?

A torque sensor — Eunorau lists “Sensor: Torque sensor” on the Meta 24 spec sheet. It measures how hard you press the pedals and meters assist in proportion, so the motor feels like your own legs got stronger rather than like a switch flipping. A cadence sensor, far more common at this price, only detects whether the cranks are turning and delivers a fixed burst regardless of effort — the on-off surge that first-time eBike owners complain about. Are the 24 × 3.0 tyres fat tyres?

No — they are wide commuter tyres, sometimes called plus tyres. A true fat tyre starts around 4.0″; a standard commuter tyre is 1.9–2.4″. At 3.0″ the Innovas sit between the two, giving a generous air cushion over cracked pavement, gravel shoulders, streetcar tracks and packed-snow edges without the heavy, draggy steering of a true fat tyre.
