Why the A7 Pro Is in a Category of Its Own

The A7 Pro is the only mid-drive, full-suspension, step-thru eBike under $3,000 in Canada. Read that again. Every word matters:

• Mid-drive motor — ANANDA M100, 500W, 130 Nm of torque. Drives through the Shimano 9-speed gears. Motor torque multiplies through gear selection — in first gear on a steep hill, the effective force at the rear wheel is enormous. We climbed sustained 8–9% grades at a steady 22 km/h without the motor breaking a sweat. Hub motors on the same hill either slow to a crawl or overheat.
• Torque sensor — measures how hard you push the pedals, not just whether they are spinning. Push harder, get more power. Ease off, it eases off. We do not use the word “fun” lightly, but the torque sensor on the A7 Pro makes pedalling genuinely fun. It is the closest thing to having bionic legs.
• Full suspension — SR-Suntour X1-BOOST fork (120 mm travel) + DNM AO-06 rear shock (38 mm travel) + dropper seatpost (100 mm travel). Three suspension elements working together. Insane comfortable. Potholes, frost heaves, gravel washboards, construction zones — all absorbed with composure that would be impressive on a $5,000 mountain bike.
• Step-thru frame — low step-over height for easy mounting and dismounting. No swinging your leg over a high top tube. Essential for seniors, riders with hip or knee issues, anyone in work clothes, and anyone who values convenience over posturing.

The One Downfall: Fine Mud

After two years, we found one thing the A7 Pro does not handle well: fine, silty mud.

The mid-drive motor sits at the bottom bracket with an exposed chain and cassette. In normal rain, wet roads, snow, and packed dirt — no problem. But fine mud (the kind that looks like brown paste) can work into the chain and around the mid-drive housing. In the worst case, the chain binds. This is not unique to the A7 Pro — every mid-drive eBike with an exposed drivetrain faces this.

The fix: Apply Finish Line Wet or Muc-Off Wet Lube before muddy rides. Rinse the drivetrain with a garden hose (not a pressure washer) after. If your primary riding is through deep silty mud trails, a hub-motor bike may be more practical for those specific conditions.

For every other condition we tested — rain, snow, ice, gravel, packed dirt, pavement, construction zones — the A7 Pro performed flawlessly. One weakness in two years is a record most eBikes would envy.

Honest Mid-Drive Warning

If you do not want to shift gears, do not buy a mid-drive. Period.

Not just this bike — any mid-drive. The A7 Pro’s motor works through the 9-speed gears. That is what makes it efficient and powerful. But it means you need to shift: downshift before hills, upshift on flats, shift under light pedal pressure. If you want a “twist and go” experience with no thinking, buy a hub motor step-thru instead. But if you are willing to learn 9 gears (it takes one afternoon), the A7 Pro will reward you with a ride that no hub motor can match.
