When You’d Need a New Crank Arm

• Stripped pedal threads — If the pedal thread inside the crank arm strips, the pedal will no longer hold securely. Once the aluminium thread is gone, the arm has to be replaced — it cannot be safely re-tapped for the same pedal.
• Bent or cracked arm — After a hard impact, curb strike, or drop, a crank arm can bend or crack. A bent arm throws off your pedal stroke and puts uneven load on the bottom bracket. A cracked arm can fail without warning.
• Loose on the spindle — If the arm keeps working loose even after you re-torque the bolt, the square or splined interface where it meets the spindle may be worn out (rounded). A fresh arm restores a tight, click-free fit.
• Persistent clicking or creaking — A worn crank-arm-to-spindle interface creates a rhythmic click that follows your pedal cadence. When re-tightening no longer silences it, the arm itself is the fix.

Many riders can. Removing the old arm and fitting the new one usually needs a hex key or socket wrench, and the drive side often needs a crank puller to draw the arm off the spindle. If you’re not comfortable, any local bike shop can do it quickly.
