What You Should Know Before Buying (Honest Take)
We do not write product pages that pretend a bike is perfect. Here is the honest assessment:
- 77 lbs is heavy. The 800 Wh battery, the steel-reinforced rear rack, and the cargo-rated frame all add weight. Without the battery the bike weighs 67 lbs — pull the battery out before lifting the bike onto a roof rack or up apartment stairs. The motor makes the weight disappear when riding, but if your routine involves carrying the bike up multiple flights, factor this in honestly.
- 20-inch wheels feel different. If you are coming from a 26-inch or 27.5-inch commuter, the smaller wheel changes the ride feel. Smaller wheels accelerate faster but feel more reactive at speed. They turn tighter at low speeds (a feature in cargo work) but cover less ground per pedal stroke (a small efficiency penalty). After a week of riding most people stop noticing. Some never adjust. Test ride before committing if 20-inch wheels are new to you.
- One-size frame is not literally one-size. Velotric specifies a fit range of 5'0" to 6'3" on the single frame. The 500mm standover and 1040–1180mm adjustable handlebar height accommodate a wide range — but a 5'0" rider and a 6'3" rider will have meaningfully different riding postures on the same bike. The 6'3" rider sits more upright; the 5'0" rider has a slightly compact reach. Most riders 5'4"–5'11" will find the bike fits with no compromises.
- Plastic platform pedals. Velotric ships utility eBikes with plastic pedals to keep the price competitive. They work fine for most riders. If you ride in dress shoes, in heavy boots, or in winter ice conditions, upgrading to a pinned aluminium platform pedal ($30–$60) is a worthwhile aftermarket spend.
- The handlebar is BMX-style with a 25.4mm crossbar. The 700mm BMX-style bar is wider than a standard commuter bar — comfortable for most riders, occasionally tight for very narrow doorways or storage scenarios. The 25.4mm crossbar accepts most aftermarket accessories (phone mounts, bell, light bracket) but not 31.8mm-clamp accessories without an adapter.
- Class 3 capability is unlocked, not Canadian-default. The bike ships at 32 km/h (Standard-class) for Canadian compliance. Class 3 (45 km/h) is unlockable in software, but it is not legal to ride at that speed on Canadian public roads or pathways under the federal eBike standard. The GoMad is one of the rare bikes where the manufacturer is transparent about the Class 3 capability — treat it as a private-property feature, not a road-legal default.
- No mid-drive option in this model. 85 Nm from a hub motor is impressive, but on sustained 10%+ grades with full cargo, a mid-drive will outperform any hub motor — mid-drives leverage the bike’s gears, hub motors spin at one ratio. If your daily route includes regular steep climbs with heavy cargo, a mid-drive cargo bike (typically $4,500+) is the technical answer. For mixed urban terrain with occasional hills, the GoMad’s hub motor is more than sufficient.
- Non-Velotric accessories may need adapters. The MIK HD rack is a European cargo standard — many third-party MIK HD accessories work directly. Some North American rack accessories (Yepp child seats, Burley trailer mounts) require an adapter plate. Velotric and third-party MIK HD accessories click on without modification.
None of these are dealbreakers for the bike’s intended use case. They are the trade-offs that come with the design priorities: cargo capacity, compact footprint, all-weather capability, and integrated smart features. If those priorities match your riding life, the GoMad is the most complete bike in its category. If you need stair-climbing portability or pure speed efficiency, a different category (folding eBike or commuter) may suit you better.
Will It Fit You? — Geometry & Sizing
The GoMad uses a single one-size frame that accommodates riders from 5'0" to 6'3". It does this through three deliberate engineering choices: a low 500mm standover, a 140mm adjustable handlebar height range, and a quill stem with adjustable forward reach. Most one-size eBikes work for a 5-inch height range. The GoMad works across a 15-inch height range.

Rider Fit by Height
- 5'0" – 5'4" (152–163 cm) — Excellent fit. The 500mm standover and 720mm minimum saddle height accommodate shorter riders that most utility eBikes ignore. Handlebar at full-up position. Most cargo eBikes do not fit shorter riders — the GoMad is one of the few that does.
- 5'5" – 5'10" (165–178 cm) — Sweet spot. Centre of the saddle and handlebar adjustment range. Comfortable upright posture for cargo work, comfortable forward posture for commuting. The single-frame compromise hits this height range with no compromises.
- 5'11" – 6'1" (180–185 cm) — Comfortable fit. Saddle near upper third of range. Handlebar position personal preference. Reach is compact but not cramped at this height.
- 6'2" – 6'3" (188–191 cm) — Functional fit, not optimal. Saddle at maximum, handlebar at lowest position. The 420mm reach is the limiting dimension — expect a slightly upright, compact-reach posture. Acceptable for cargo work where upright posture is preferred. Less ideal for long-distance commuting where a stretched-out posture is more efficient.
- Over 6'3" (above 191 cm) — Velotric does not specify the GoMad for riders above 6'3". A taller rider should consider a 26-inch or 27.5-inch commuter platform like the Velotric Discover 3 for better fit.

Is the GoMad legal on Canadian roads and bike paths?
Yes — when configured to the Canadian Standard-class limit. Out of the box the GoMad ships at 32 km/h, which is the legal cut-off for power-assisted bicycles in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and most other provinces. The bike is internally capable of higher speeds (Class 3 up to 45 km/h) for jurisdictions where that is permitted, but Canadian riders should leave it at the 32 km/h Standard-class setting for legal road and pathway use. What is the real-world range in Canadian conditions?
The rated 120 km pedal-assist range assumes ideal conditions on a 180 lb rider in torque-sensor mode at low PAS. Real-world on 20 × 4.0″ fat tires, expect: 80–105 km in summer at PAS 2–3 unloaded; 60–80 km at 0°C; 45–60 km at −10°C. How does the anti-theft system actually work?
Three layers. First, an Apple Find My / Google Find Hub chip is built into the frame — the bike shows up on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or any Android device on the corresponding network, even when powered off. Second, an NFC unlock card disables the motor when the bike is locked — without the card or the app, the bike will not power on. Third, the trigger throttle is removable — pop it off and the bike loses one of its theft incentives. None of this replaces a good U-lock, but combined with one, the GoMad is one of the harder eBikes to steal and resell in this category.
